The Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer (VP, CMO) serves as a member of the President and CEO’s executive leadership team, providing vision, direction, leadership, execution, and management of all marketing and communications initiatives.

Qualifications and Leadership Skills

  • 10+ years of experience in positions of increasing responsibilities, with a focus on business-to-consumer marketing strategies and trends. Non-profit experience preferred.
  • Five+ years of managing, developing and leading teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Development, Communications or related field.
  • Strong strategic mindset with the ability to translate strategies into actionable plans and measurable results.
  • High-level marketing and brand strategy experience demonstrating innovative and proven revenue and engagement results require.
  • Innovative thinker and creative problem solver with a willingness to challenge the status quo.
  • Ability to be agile when managing multiple high-priority, high-visibility projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent project and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication oral, written and presentation skills. 

The VP, CMO leads association-wide marketing initiatives, including activities related to conceptualizing and implementing innovative, high-impact marketing strategies and achieving marketing targets for increased brand awareness and membership and fundraising revenue. Responsibilities include:

  • Act as a strategic partner and collaborate with our CEO, COO, Operation, Membership and Engagement teams, and other leadership members to develop and implement marketing/communications strategies to meet and exceed initiatives and goals.
  • Collaborate closely with the leadership team to establish and maintain a consistent and compelling brand vision, while aligning marketing efforts with the company's overall strategic goals.
  • Manage the day -to-day operations, which includes promotion and messaging the diverse and expansive programming of our dynamic organization that is striving to grow. 
  • Provide strategic leadership, to the marketing team that is integrating the key priorities of the organization into a cohesive message for the members and the greater community. 
  • Cultivate a culture where marketing is a key partner in the Y, listening and providing leadership to the overall operation. 
  • Mentor, motivate, and lead the Marketing team in day-to-day operations with an emphasis on a service culture, objectives and success. Develop and retain talented employees, leading the team to become highly engaged, customer-service focused and high performing.
  • Develop a winning culture that supports high-energy interaction, responsiveness, attentiveness, and high integrity.
  • Envision and execute new marketing approaches and channels to reach and engage key audiences, including members, staff, donors, and volunteers.
  • Establish, direct, execute, and oversee integrated brand and marketing strategies, policies, and initiatives to meet organizational objectives.
  • Provide leadership in the assessment, evolution and development of market-informed process, programs and services that support the Association’s objectives.
  • Oversee the creation, production and implementation of inspiring campaigns, program and materials that build the brand and drive sales, renewal and retention.
  • Understand and interpret market dynamics for use in optimizing strategy and/or gaining efficiencies and developing new programs to meet key business, sales, and revenue objectives.
  • Lead efforts to create a best-in-class social media presence that empowers stakeholders to spread the brand virally. Develop innovative campaigns that increase quality followers and turn them into future consumers.
  • Establish best-in-class approaches for acquisition, retention, engagement and renewal for all Y members and programs.
  • Continue to develop and strengthen the association’s image to build brand non-profit service awareness, relevance, reputation, and esteem among target audiences.
  • Foster relationships and collaborate with local community leaders to advance the Y and our strategic objectives.
  • Collaborate with YMCA colleagues regionally and nationally to learn, share and employ proven experience and marketing strategies. Help elevate efficiency and effectiveness through active contributions and participation in leading-edge experience, marketing and innovation initiatives.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Y’s mission, values and to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Ensure Y-USA Brand Compliance and leads brand audits as necessary.
  • Develop and control department budget and forecast using the online budget software to ensure transparency and accountability.

Compensation Range: $150,000.00 to $180,000.00/year depending on experience and qualifications.

Location: This is a hybrid position. Must be able to travel to and work at the Y’s Association Office in Tacoma, WA and at various YMCA Centers and Program locations throughout Pierce and Kitsap Counties as needed.
