This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction of the President & CEO, and in accordance with the Christian mission and purpose of the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana, the Vice President of Finance is responsible for overseeing all financial matters, investments, and insurance programs.  The Vice President of Finance provides strategic direction and leadership for YMCA business operations and initiatives of the Association.  The Vice President of Finance also recommends related policies and ensures their implementation.

  • The Vice President of Finance will bring a balance of servant leadership and strong management /compliance acumen; balancing strong relationships with managing expectations that reflect effective financial and fiduciary performance by the staff and Board of Directors.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance or related field; Certified Public Accountant (CPA) &/or Master’s Degree in Business Administration preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive finance/accounting leadership experience in an organization with multiple revenue streams and operations units.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of general business matters required including budget development, financial reporting, accrual based accounting, cash management, business taxes, banking, debt, investments, and financing instruments.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel with advanced abilities and knowledge of computerized accounting systems.
    Ability to effectively communicate orally, present information, and respond to questions from groups of staff, volunteers, members, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and support the work of others. 
    Possess high level of integrity and ability to use good judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • Proven collaboration and communication skills with ability to build and maintain strong business relationships with volunteers, staff at all levels of the organization and external partners/vendors.
  • Previous experience with voluntary/nonprofit organization.
  • Serves as the Association representative to the Finance Committee.  Supports the Association Treasurer at all Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings. Assists the CEO in responding to financial matters and inquiries requested by the Board of Directors and its related committees.
  • Serves on the Executive Leadership Team and other ad hoc staff/volunteer committees as requested.
  • Implements appropriate systems and internal controls to adequately safeguard the YMCA and its combined affiliate organization resources, and to provide a solid basis for accurately reporting financial data.
  • Develops, revises, and maintains the necessary ledger systems for financial accounting, record keeping, reporting, and compliance with regard to the legal, tax, and audit requirements for the Association and its combined affiliate(s), and any additional entities for which a shared service/ management type agreement is in place.  
  • Manages and provides leadership to the annual budgeting process including: issuing guidelines and procedures; financial analysis and reporting, training staff, auditing budgets, and ongoing monthly monitoring of actual results against budget.
  • Supervises accounting and finance personnel and procedures; maintains control over receipts, disbursements, grant & debt compliance, and business operations.
  • Manages treasury and forecasts cash flow needs on a routine basis.
  • Oversees, monitors, and reports on all financing within the Association, including leases, bonds, lines of credit, tax credits, and other financing tools.
  • Reviews accounting & financial matters related to grant compliance.
  • Collects data, analyzes information, prepares reports, and makes recommendations on special projects as needed or as requested.
  • Oversees the month-end and year-end closings and the preparation of statements, reports, and tax filings. 
  • Manages good working relationships with professional service providers, such as bankers, attorneys, accountants, insurance companies, other financial institutions and vendors. 
  • Handles requests for financial information or action. 
  • Evaluates and manages the annual renewal of the association insurance policies including property/casualty, general liability, D&O, etc.
  • Ensures that legal financial reporting compliance is met to maintain an active 501(c)(3) status and YMCA charter.
