School-Age Program Director

The YMCA of Rock River Valley is seeking a cause-driven leader to serve as the School-Age Program Director.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance of the Vice President of Youth Development, the School-Age Program Director is responsible for the organization, delivery and quality of YMCA Before and After School, and Adventure Camp programs to the members, program participants and community. The Program Director will directly supervise the Site Coordinators and staff of the assigned programs. This position works independently under general direction and is expected to determine how to accomplish tasks.

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field; Minimum High School Diploma or GED required
  • Training required upon hire: Child Abuse Prevention, Blood-borne Pathogens, IL Gateways Child Development Overview, Health Issues for Group Care, Nutrition Issues for Group Care, Safety Issues for Group Care; IL DCFS Child Abuse and Neglect/Mandated Reporter. Any additional certifications that are required by the state of Illinois
  • 1-2 years related experience in leadership in a childcare setting
  • Experience in effectively managing a staff team
  • CPR, AED and First Aid Certifications required within 90 days
  • Praesidium Academy trainings
  • YMCA Leader Team Leader certification preferred
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations
  • Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relationships with others
  1. Recruits, hires, supervises, and schedules program staff. Actively involved in staff professional development, identifying training needs, facilitating training sessions, and mentoring in collaboration with other program directors and supervisors.
  2. Regularly visits sites to lead and develop staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality and safe programs. Conducts staff and program evaluations, oversees safety inspections, and provides ongoing support and guidance.
  3. Adapts and continuously improves program curriculum in line with YMCA Before and After School and Adventure Camp standards. Implements innovative strategies to enhance educational and recreational activities.
  4. Leads efforts to grow program enrollment and expand offerings. Monitors and analyzes trends to identify opportunities for program development.
  5. Ensures all site operations adhere to state, local, and YMCA standards and policies. Maintains staff-to-participant ratios and ensures 100% compliance with regulatory requirements.
  6. Builds effective relationships with internal and external partners, addressing issues, communicating program updates, and resolving conflicts. Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with school personnel and families to support youth needs. The Y: We’re for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  7. Manages accurate records of staff certifications, trainings, and program documentation. Assists in registration, billing, and collection processes.
  8. Manages departmental budget, oversees inventory of site equipment and supplies, and ensures cost-effective use of resources.
  9. Coordinates special events and community engagement activities. Innovates to enhance program appeal and participation.
  10. Takes a leadership role in organizing staff meetings and ensuring clear, effective communication within the team.
  11. Champions a focus on character development, diversity, equity, and inclusion in all programming. Encourages an environment of respect and understanding.
  12. Promptly reports and addresses damaged equipment or safety hazards. Ensures a safe and well-maintained environment for staff and participants.
  13. Participates in the Manager on Duty schedule as assigned.
  14. Performs other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Rock River Valley.
