The Aquatics Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operation of the aquatics department at the West Cook YMCA. This includes supervising staff, developing and implementing aquatic programs, ensuring safety and compliance, and delivering high-quality experiences that align with the YMCA’s mission to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

West Cook YMCA Abuse Policy

The West Cook YMCA will not tolerate the mistreatment or abuse of youth or consumers in its programs. A youth is defined as anyone younger than 18 years of age. Any mistreatment or abuse by a staff member or volunteer will result in corrective action, up to and including termination of employment or volunteer service. All reports of suspicious or inappropriate behavior with youth or an allegation of abuse will be taken seriously.

The West Cook YMCA will fully cooperate with authorities to investigate all cases of alleged abuse. All West Cook YMCA staff and volunteers shall cooperate to the fullest extent possible in any external investigation by outside authorities or internal investigation conducted by the West Cook YMCA or persons given investigative authority by the West Cook YMCA. Failure to cooperate fully may be grounds for termination.

Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Sports Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
3–5 years of experience in aquatics management or a related leadership role.
Current certifications: Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid (YMCA or Red Cross preferred).
YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor and/or Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred.
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Program Development & Management

Plan, develop, and oversee all aquatic programs, including swim lessons, lifeguard training, water fitness classes, and competitive swim teams.
Evaluate program effectiveness and make improvements based on member feedback and participation trends.
Expand aquatics offerings to meet community needs and increase engagement.
Staff Leadership & Development

Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise aquatics staff, including lifeguards, swim instructors, and coaches.
Provide ongoing training, performance evaluations, and professional development opportunities.
Ensure proper staff certifications and maintain compliance with YMCA and state requirements.
Safety & Risk Management

Maintain the highest standards of safety and cleanliness in all aquatic areas.
Enforce all pool rules and regulations in accordance with YMCA policies and local/state health codes.
Develop and implement emergency action plans; conduct regular drills and audits.
Ensure proper chemical balance and maintenance of pools and equipment.
Member Engagement & Customer Service

Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members and participants.
Address member concerns and feedback promptly and professionally.
Promote aquatics programs through outreach, events, and community partnerships.
Budgeting & Administration

Develop and manage the aquatics department budget, including revenue and expenses.
Monitor financial performance and implement strategies to meet or exceed goals.
Maintain accurate records, reports, and program data.
Facility Oversight

Coordinate with maintenance staff to ensure aquatic facilities are clean, safe, and fully operational.
Oversee scheduling and usage of pool spaces to maximize efficiency and accessibility.
